Tarzan #207 - April 1972

sg
"Arrival" by Marv Wolfman and Murphy Anderson.

Starting today, we jump back a few years in John Carter's comic book history, to when he made his debut in DC's new Tarzan series:

Carter flashes back as to how he ended up in the cave, and that he saw the red planet in the night sky, and found himself mysteriously transported millions of miles, waking up in an unbelievable spot:
sg
Carter discovers his amazing abilities, thanks to Mars' lower gravity. He also finds a building housed with Martian eggs, only for his discover to be interrupted by a small army of multi-armed Martians on horseback!

After an initial round of fisticuffs, Carter tries to explain he has no desire to fight them. Via some form of telepathy, the Martians seem to understand him:

...to be continued!

DC's version of John Carter is, initially, more faithful in tone and structure than Marvel's--the story opens just like the original novel does, and there's a general calmness that was martian miles away from Marvel's all-action house style.

One similarity to Marvel's John Carter was the art: while they had Gil Kane rendering Carter's adventures, here we have Murphy Anderson and, on the pin-up, Gray Morrow. Not bad for a gentlemen from Virginia!
